The development and launching of ambulatory assisting devices protect people in need by offering better safety and security. The SENSACTION-AAL ('Sensing and action to support mobility in ambient assisted living') project, funded under the 'Information society technologies' (IST) Thematic area of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) to the tune of EUR 2 million, is introducing smart body-fixed sensor-based technology that enables doctors to initiate interventions for patients at home.
+
+
The SENSACTION-AAL project partners have developed the 'DynaPort Hybrid' device and 'MoveMonitor' application that enable movement sensing, data collection and data transmission in a single compact package. The user's physical movement and body posture are monitored and recorded by the devices that are worn on the user's waist in a special elastic belt.
+
+
The DynaPort Hybrid device can operate for up to 75 hours on a single battery charge. Data is collected from accelerometers and gyroscopes, and stored on flash memory. The information can then be transmitted to a user's or doctor's personal computer via the Bluetooth wireless protocol.
+
+
The devices also give users extra support when doing rehabilitation exercises; they can also be configured to signal for help when the user has an accident.
+
+
'These devices respond to a growing demand from the medical community for the long-term collection of data from people with mobility problems and motor disorders,' said Rob van Lummel of McRoberts, a SENSACTION-AAL partner from the Netherlands that developed the wireless devices. 'The information they gather allows doctors to better understand a patient's symptoms and in turn treat them more effectively.'
+
+
For instance, doctors treating people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease will be able to provide better medical support because their assessments will be based on information obtained from the devices and not only from the patients' own descriptions.
+
+
'A key feature of our devices is that they allow data to be gathered over a longer period of time, from three to seven days,' van Lummel said. 'This is important because doctors need to see how mobility problems affect people during their daily lives and while performing different activities.'
+
+
According to the partners, not only will the devices improve the diagnosis of mobility problems, but they will also support patient rehabilitation by informing users that they are performing exercises correctly. Ultimately, patients will become more aware of their motion and posture, and will be able to spend less time travelling to and from hospitals and rehabilitation centres.
+
+
'We are certain that, in the future, more and more healthcare services will be provided remotely in the home rather than in hospitals,' van Lummel pointed out.
+

Experts believe that interest in this field of research is growing in both the public and private healthcare sectors.

Said project coordinator Lorenzo Chiari of the University of Bologna in Italy: 'We are seeing a lot of interest in remote monitoring solutions. Patients like the sense of safety and reassurance they provide, while healthcare providers see the potential to provide better treatment at lower cost.'

The DynaPort Hybrid device can operate for up to 75 hours on a single battery charge. Data is collected from accelerometers and gyroscopes, and stored on flash memory. The information can then be transmitted to a user's or doctor's personal computer via the Bluetooth wireless protocol.

The devices also give users extra support when doing rehabilitation exercises; they can also be configured to signal for help when the user has an accident.

For instance, doctors treating people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease will be able to provide better medical support because their assessments will be based on information obtained from the devices and not only from the patients' own descriptions.

'A key feature of our devices is that they allow data to be gathered over a longer period of time, from three to seven days,' van Lummel said. 'This is important because doctors need to see how mobility problems affect people during their daily lives and while performing different activities.'

'We are certain that, in the future, more and more healthcare services will be provided remotely in the home rather than in hospitals,' van Lummel pointed out.

SENSACTION-AAL partners are from Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Spain.

The 'virtual human' healthcare model

via News on 6/30/09

A revolution in healthcare treatment and diagnosis may be imminent with a pan-European personalised healthcare project, the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH), a Network of Excellence (NoE). Funded with EUR 72 million under the 'Information and communication technologies' Theme of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), the VPH aims to create an entire framework to deliver personalised patient computer models for the predictive healthcare of the future. Success could significantly limit the need for animal testing and patient drug trials.

A total of 13 institutions from 7 countries are involved in the VPH network. The partners hope that once their 'personalised healthcare framework' has been created, a wide range of doctors, scientists and researchers will be able to virtually investigate the human body as a single complex organism.

The VPH project will also create a constantly expanding knowledge database, which will be used to develop better patient diagnosis and treatment.

A postgraduate VPH training programme at the University of Nottingham in the UK will help scientists from diverse disciplines to carry out collaborative studies across the EU. Mathematicians and medical researchers who use mathematical modelling will work together to find solutions to complex biomedical problems, for example. Researchers from academia and industry will meet this week to present technical problems relating to regenerative medicine, particularly those involving epithelial cells in the skin, bladder, lungs, heart and breast.

It is hoped that the study groups will develop new theoretical illness models that may eventually form the basis for new research projects.

Dr Bindi Brook of the University of Nottingham's School of Mathematical Sciences said, 'This study group is one of the prototypes for the sort of collaborative study which will be a key feature of our new VPH training programme. The course will allow postgraduates to train within the VPH network of European universities and, crucially, to access and contribute to a virtual VPH academy online.'

The VPH project may revolutionise medical healthcare in the future. Employing emerging technologies such as genomics means that researchers in all areas can make use of enormous amounts of crucial and detailed physiological data. At the same time, advances in computer and information technology will make it easier for this information to be used to create genetic profiles of patients. It is hoped that over the next 10 years these advances will include treatments for both cancer and HIV/AIDS.

CDT and EFF today released a joint report examining the use of analytics tools on federal agency Web sites. Analytics typically track user behavior on a site; the data is used to create a better user experience. The report analyzes existing policy and makes recommendations for how federal agency Web sites can use analytics tools while protecting citizen privacy. Agency Web sites will play a key role in the Administration’s plan to create an environment that fosters a more participatory government, but new uses of technology must be approached with special attention given to privacy. Researchers in the EU-funded PERSONA ('Perceptive spaces promoting independent aging') project are drawing on a range of advanced technologies to empower the elderly and support them in their efforts to maintain both their independence and a good quality of life.

Over EUR 6 million of the project's EUR 11.6 million budget comes from the 'Information Society Technologies' Thematic area of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). PERSONA began in 2007 and is scheduled to run until 2010.

The proportion of senior citizens in Europe's population is rising steadily, and by 2020 a quarter of this population will be over 65 years of age. Many of these people will suffer from health conditions and memory problems that could reduce their quality of life and make it harder for them to live independently.

The concept of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) refers to the range of technologies and services, particularly those based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), that can be used to help the elderly remain independent and maintain a good quality of life.

The aim of the PERSONA project is to further the development of AAL products and services that are affordable, easy to use and commercially viable. Crucially, the project partners are developing an integrated technological platform that seamlessly links up the different products and services. Furthermore, the team is working on certain hardware developments, such as intelligent textiles for use in devices that interact with the users, short-range communication networks to link up sensors and systems, and an indoor localisation system.

'Our aim is to help the user[s] to be autonomous, to increase their self confidence and [to] increase their participation in society,' explained Siri Bjørvig of the Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine, one of the project partners.

With this in mind, the partners are focusing their efforts on four scenarios, which involve safety, mobility, communication and autonomy. As its name suggests, the 'feel safe' scenario looks at AAL services designed to prevent injuries in the home environment; this gives users the confidence to live without the constant presence of a carer. If someone living alone has an accident or collapses, there are AAL solutions that can detect the problem and alert a neighbour or the health services, for example. Similarly, the system could alert the users if they forget to switch the oven off.

The mobility scenario investigates how senior citizens can be supported when they leave their homes, with the help of a mobile device that reminds them of errands they have to run, for example.

The 'keep in touch' scenario places emphasis on preventing isolation and loneliness, by providing users with ICT tools to help them create and maintain social contacts and participate in community life.

Finally, the 'be autonomous' package is designed to assist the users throughout the day, providing guidance on daily activities to boost independence and autonomy while minimising risks. For instance, the system could remind users to take medication at a certain time.

The technologies developed by PERSONA are set to undergo tests at three sites in Denmark, Spain and Italy.
